Turn Based Strategy Games

Chess, checkers, and other board games are the real forefathers of all later variations of strategic warfare. Turn Based Strategy Games are their direct heir in the age of computer technology. Much like their real-time counterparts, the TBS make the player work with resources, upgrades, and usually armies. Whenever it is the player's turn to act, he or she must execute as many commands as possible, laying the foundations of a strategic plan that would lead to the eventual victory. More often than not, there is not a time limit as per how long a player can deliberate on his or her actions. Slower in pace when compared to RTS, turn based games often provide much greater strategic depth, because each move matters a lot.

Turn Based Strategy

An excellent example for an engulfing turn based strategy is Rebuild and its sequel. The player has control over a small portion of the map, which is surrounded by hungry zombies.
Through strategic use of the available resource, i. e. humans, the player can perform series of missions for the benefit of the last survivors of the zombie apocalypse. Gathering food and securing enough houses for all the survivors covers the basic management of resources. Building strong defenses and sending troops to cleanse and conquer adjacent territories is the element of strategic warfare, so crucial for the successful conclusion of the game. By the end of each day zombie attacks can be expected. There is no real-time action, nor can the player influence the outcome of any mission. Once the commands are given, all it takes is a few turns to see whether the results are positive or disastrous.

On the other hand, games like The Last Village combine turn based elements with real-time tactical warfare which is more akin to the strategy defense sub-genre. There the player has to deploy his platoons strategically around the map. Each unit can cover limited distance per turn, which is only natural for any TBS. By the end of each turn, the player gains resources, but the construction of any building is instantaneous, given that enough resources are available. In this regard, Rebuild is closer in spirit to the classic Turn Based Strategy Games where every single task takes certain amount of turns to be completed. This doesn't put The Last Village beyond the TBS category, though. Probably the most suitable example for a classic TBS gameplay is Warnet: Knights & Cannons where the player can move his squads around the map. Each unit has limited movement and certain strengths. The battles are not animated at all; the outcome is decided according to the composition of each of the opposing forces.

In terms of gameplay, Turn Based Strategy Games can offer several variations but their basics remain the same. In essence, the player can perform limited amount of actions per turn. When put in perspective, these actions should accumulate enough strength as to defeat the opponent. Lacks early on can be carried out for long, resulting in defeat. That's why every single action should be calculated with precision.
